Stamford seems to be half way to just about everywhere
Rutland Radio is a really brilliant radio station, I thoroughly recommend it – it plays great music, tells you everything that is going on locally and makes you laugh (OK, I may be just a little biased as they just interviewed me for 20 Best Local Walks - I was very impressed that Rob Persani came out to chat with me whilst we were in the middle of a walk, and it was drizzling.)
This morning Rutland Radio did a quiz asking what we typically spend 18 years of our life doing and apparently it’s commuting – that’s shocking in terms of time wasted and CO2 emitted.
I am lucky enough to work from home and to have an office within two hundred yards of my house, so my commuting time per week is about 10 minutes and it also allows me to go to the Post Office and buy bread from Askers en route. But in my previous life I travelled for at least 20 hours a week, so I save over 40 days a year which I can spend on doing something I really enjoy like just lolling around.
Stamford is emerging as one of the country’s foremost places to work from home, or in a small office in town, with all the facilities available within a stone’s throw, and the ambience proving to be a magnet for recruiting people from outside the area.
Stamford also has a superb geographic location, pretty much in the centre of the country.
As one business friend from London put it, “I often meet clients in the George because Stamford seems to be pretty much half way to just about everywhere.”
So the town is certainly doing its bit for global warming and individual sanity.
