Me and MY car!

For those who have detected a Porsche bias in my columns – here’s the reason!

I’m pretty passionate about my car, and spend all day every day talking to similar people – I run a pair of car care products companies, so also try to keep mine looking good. So I have a company Volvo estate to cart stock around in, but really do prefer driving my 1991 Porsche 944Turbo, which I’ve owned for 5 years.

It’s my third Porsche, following a 911 and the 3.0 non-Turbo version, and it’s practical and a joy to drive. It’s potent, with 250 bhp, almost perfectly balanced with 49:51 split of power to front and back and so handles beautifully. I’ve taken it on track at Brands Hatch which was fantastic, if wearing on pads and tyres, but showed its capabilities are way ahead of mine.

It’s also very comfortable – suspension is communicative but not overly hard, steering light and with a/c, ABS and a few mod cons, the all-leather seats are a snug and supportive fit. I can also fit the whole family plus overnight gear in it, and a summer blast to Norfolk is a hoot.

Some people may consider any Porsche a bit flash, but at 17 years old mine’s very much an enthusiast’s choice. Interestingly, most Boxster or recent 911 owners don’t give me a second glance so I’m not driving this to look good – I own it because you’ve got to have some fun and I enjoy it. Plus, it’s proven a good investment as it’s worth more than I paid for it! Overall, its proving very reliable - the key with these old cars is to buy a good one, look after it properly and use it – though with my office a mile from home, it’s questionable if the short runs are good for it.

I have to admit to a hankering for a Ferrari – I love the sound, the pure focus on speed and handling, forgetting such niceties as practicality, reliability and often build quality, and it will have to be red! Luckily I spend a great deal of time around these cars and their owners so have driven and ridden in quite a few. Hopefully we’ll have some at the Stamford Car Show on the Meadows on August Bank Holiday Sunday this year.

So, whatever you drive, enjoy it and thanks for reading these past 5 years.
