Sally Stillingfleet looks at new ways to look sun-kissed without relying on the sun
A blast of summer sunshine can cause panic, shorter skirts and dresses can expose dry, wintry flesh on show for the first time since winter hibernation. With all the adverse publicity surrounding the use of sun beds and over exposure to the sun’s harmful rays, beauty therapists across the board recommend including a good SPF (Sun Protection Factor) year round within our daily beauty and make-up routine to protect the skin form sun damage and act as welcome prevention from premature ageing. As Charlotte Moore from Serenity explained “No matter what you do, if you don’t use an SPF under your usual moisturiser or use a moisturiser with a SPF of 25 or higher your skin will age with exposure to the sun’s rays, even in winter.” Why not try Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 from Body Matters to give skin absolute hydration and help defend against the internal and external causes of skin ageing with its medium-weight, emollient daily moisturising qualities.
Aromatica recommend a new range of 100% organic products by Noem. The hero product in the brand new range is called Intense Destress Body Polish, which used alone has a quite gritty texture. However, combine this product with Everyday Body Wash and use in the shower for a far gentler way to exfoliate and clean skin or combine with Organic Unwind Bath and Body Oil for a totally luxurious treat.
Serenity’s Charlotte Moore recommends the Spafind range used in her salon treatments and retails the products to use at home for outstanding results. She is the only salon to offer Spafind in the area and particularly likes these mineral-based ranges, which are both natural products, Paraben free.

Take a look at yourself in a full-length mirror, facing sideways. Starting from the middle of your ear, draw an imaginary plumb-line all the way to the floor, noticing where it passes through your body. For ideal postural alignment the line should pass through the middle of the shoulder and hip, just behind the kneecap and just in front of the ankle joint. If this does not resemble your own alignment, you are probably causing unnecessary stress and strain to your joints and muscles. Consistent poor posture results in pain, strain and ultimately injury. A careful, gentle exercise programme like yoga, Pilates, Gyrokinesisâ or Alexander Technique can help you get ‘back in line’.
Fit2go?
With summer in mind and swimwear looming Linda Lawson launched her company Fit2go in response to personal experience more than anything. She recognised that she was not a naturally tall slim person and was prone to peaks and troughs of varying fitness levels brought on by her busy lifestyle. Now she can redress the balance by providing a very prescriptive service for those of us not suited to the gym. Linda can tailor a programme for you as an individual and can arrange to meet with you as much or as little as you like to put you through your paces. She is a member of The Register of Exercise Professionals, who set the standard of training required. If you would like to find out more about the benefits, for one to one guidance and a variety of exercise methods call Linda to discuss your ideas or visit her website to find out more.

Madhavi, a professional beauty therapist, is now here at Body Matters to offer Threading. Madhavi removes individual or rows of unwanted hair by using ‘thread’, and pulling out the hairs by the follicle. Threading can be practised all over the face, neck, even in manicure and pedicure, to remove unwanted hair on fingers and toes. Clients say Madhavi creates an ‘ultimate arch’ that gives her clients a unique look.
Caci Ultra at Renaissance
I was unaware that the original CACI treatment was more of a facial toning treatment; a high tec muscle work-out for the face and neck, designed to tone and define facial muscles. The range of treatments under the umbrella of CACI has now expanded thanks to brand new Futur-Tec equipment with many more applications, including help for acne sufferers and a new Cellulite treatment. Fiona’s is the only salon in Stamford to offer CACI, so I went along to try out CACI Ultra. The latest innovation at Renaissance lasts an hour and a half and is as luxurious and surprising as the results.
Preliminary cleansing prepares the skin for the non-invasive skin peel to deep clean and exfoliate the epidermis. Sonic vibrations with a flat metal hand-piece swept over my face, with the aim of enabling greater absorption of product with a neutralising action.
A ‘ T’ shaped bar got to work on the neck and jaw line, the sensation is difficult to describe but the benefits should reduce sagging and define the area more dramatically. Next Dual tipped probes infused with a Hexapeptide Serum further promote the benefits by delivering collagen deeper into the epidermis of the skin, in tandem with the toning work, especially around the cheek bones. The muscle ‘training’ probes tone and then remind the muscles with gentler movements later on. The ‘Ultrlase’ micro-current lifting phase of the treatment softens lines and wrinkles, plumping them up and increasing the body’s ability to produce its own collagen by 60%. This encourages water to come to the skin surface and promotes the skin’s water retaining qualities. The benefits are instantly visible and I have to say even more clearly defined as I look in the mirror the next day – Kate Moss’s cheek bones, well not yet but I reckon a course of treatments would definitely turn back the clock and keep the ageing process at bay.
