Elaine Brewster, the Chair of the Stamford Netball League, encourages you to give the game a try
The season started with some new teams and new umpires, taking our league up to three divisions, with 19 teams now playing in the league! This is great news for local netball! Some great netball got the first week off to a fab start; new teams were able to find their feet, some playing together for the first time ever. This is exactly what, as a real community league, we are aiming for, encouraging new teams of all abilities and ages to take part and hopefully keep striving forward.
It has been quite a busy few months for us, The Founders Cup has taken place, with again, some good netball being played. Many thanks go to Linda and Graham Bryan for sponsorship of this tournament.
Also approaching is the Stamford Festival tournament, this is an annual event that has taken place for many years and always proves to be a great day, with teams participating from several different counties, we hold this as one of our charity events, our charity this year being Lincs Air Ambulance, hopefully a generous amount will be made for them. This tournament is held at Stamford High School on Sunday 6th July, commencing at 10am through to 4pm. Thanks to Stamford High School for the use of their facilities.
We have held another beginners’ umpiring course, which has given the league another six successful umpires! Well done ladies, all those fraught nights are now over and you can put it all into practice!
So......anyone out there tempted?? Contact Elaine Brewster on 07851 608694. Please come along, Monday night sessions are 7pm start at Blackstones off the Ryhall Road
Ian Hall describes the activities of the Stamford & District Lions Club
For 32 years Stamford & District Lions Club has been serving the local community, as well as supporting International Charities. We are a part of Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service organisation. There are 1.3 million members worldwide, with 44,000 members in the UK alone.
We raise our money through various ways, concerts, raffles, fun days and various garden fetes in and around Stamford. For several years now clubs in the area have worked together to put a float in the Spalding Flower Parade, to further promote the good causes of Lions Clubs International.
We also run a talking newspaper, and distribute around 80 tapes weekly. There are several groups of readers within the town who get together each Friday to read The Stamford Mercury, and other informative issues.
We are not just serving the community by shaking buckets; we have a great social side, with regular visits to other clubs, annual dinners, the theatre or the pub for a pie and chat etc.
We are currently involved in Campaign Sightfirst II, a programme to rid the world of preventable blindness and the Message in a Bottle scheme, which is proven to save lives. Stamford & District Lions have run several campaigns with our bottles and will be doing so again at this year’s family fun day and in Morrison’s Supermarket 20th June.

Ketton Sports Association is one of the reasons that Ketton is such a lively and friendly village. It has three tennis courts, two cricket teams, two football pitches, a bowls club and a social club.
The Social Club celebrates its thirtieth year next year, and is going from strength to strength. There are darts, dominoes, cribbage, pool teams, even petanque and of course it is a good venue for any event. The club is open every evening and at lunchtime at weekends.
