The Barn at Wansford Health Practice

Sarah Lyon went along to see how the new converted Barn at Wansford Health has become a centre for complementary health treatments

Natural Health Advice

Dr Rhiannon Nally, A general practitioner at the Wansford Surgery, is an advocate of complementary health treatments as well as orthodox medicine:

“There is an ever increasing need to provide natural alternatives to orthodox medicine. Whilst herbal remedies have been around for thousands of years, exciting developments to mainstream medicine have taken precedent over the holistic approach to health and well being that was passed from generation to generation.

However, increasingly we realise the strength of empowering individuals to take control of their own health. To optimise nutrition, to supplement essential elements which are now missing from the diet through mass farming and food preparation, and to use herbal remedies to maintain well being but also in certain circumstances to control symptoms and modify disease processes.

Often the need for prescribed medications – with all of the incumbent side effects – is precluded or delayed.”

To this end the surgery has invited Marlene Williams, a Natural Health Advisor for Nature Sunshine and other practitioners into the Barn to help patients make informed choices about the alternative treatments available to them.

Marlene Williams, DIP ADV Nutrition by The CMA (Complementary Medical Association)

Having significant osteoporosis premenopausally , and not taking biphosphonates but Nature Sunshine Products, within a year my health has much improved and my bone density has improved by 7 percent. ~ Dr Cathy Jones, GP

Nick Meredith

Nick Meredith is a Psychotherapist and Hypnotherapist using an effective combination of Hypnosis, Solution Focussed Thearapy and NLP to help people overcome phobias, remove anxiety, relieve stress, eliminate addictions, lift depression and change limiting behaviours. He regularly practices from the Barn on weekday evenings.

Having been a smoker for the best part of 23 years I was desperate to kick this nasty habit. My session with Nick lasted two and a half hours, and started with a series of questions; key triggers to when and why I smoked. This forced me to look deeper at myself and I found the process very interesting. Hypnotherapy/NLP followed. The experience was very relaxing, and I subsequently felt that the urge to smoke was largely removed. Nick gave me follow-up techniques to use as well which was great. I love being a non-smoker. ~ Amanda Garratt

Shusha Walmsley MCH RSHOM

Shusha explains, “Homeopathy works by giving very diluted remedies which stimulate the body to heal itself. It treats the whole person and can be used alongside conventional medicine if needed. Homeopathy can be used for spiritual, emotional and physical ailments from birth to the end of a person’s life.”

Shusha specialises in infertility and can give remedies in preparation for IVF.

As a patient of Shusha’s I first experienced homoeopathic remedies in 1991. Since that time my family has been successfully treated for arthritis, skin conditions, stress, maintaining good health leading up to a major operation, blood pressure and irritable bowel syndrome… Janet Allen, Kettering

Caroline Day

Caroline is a reflexologist. Reflexology is the application of pressure to the reflex points of more than 70,000 nerve endings on the feet or hands, to improve the general well being of a person. Massage techniques are used to stimulate the reflex points, which relate to different arts of the body, where crystals (calcium deposits from the blood stream) may be present. Releasing the crystals unblocks the body’s natural pathways and helps to get rid of toxins that are present, bringing balance back into the body. Pain relief for arthritis sufferers, tension, insomnia, sinusitis and asthma.

Other services

“We are also piloting a community-based retinal screening program for glaucoma and for diabetic retinopathy, and starting a community based echocardiogram (this is in effect an ultrasound procedure which provides information about the structure of the heart). Future developments are likely to include a Holistic Dental Practice and a facial aesthetics facility.” ~ Dr Rhiannon Nally
